Eastern Turkey
Home to some of the most impressive and important archaeological sites found anywhere in the world, Eastern Turkey is a fascinating melting pot of ancient civilisations waiting for the curious traveller. Admire the walled city of Diyarbakir, Mount Nemrut and Göbekli Tepe, the world’s first temple.
Highlights
On Mount Nemrut, the gigantic funeral sanctuary edified by Antiochos the 1st, king of Commagene, stands at the summit of the highest mountain of Mesopotamia.
With its dramatic black basalt walls looming over the fertile banks of the Tigris, Diyarbakır houses Chaldean churches, historic houses and some interesting mosques.
The oldest known temple on earth is located at Göbekli Tepe, a discovery which radically changed historians' knowledge of sites with religious significance. The megaliths here predate Stonehenge by some 6,000 years.
