Hattusa from Cappadocia
Private tour : Hittite Heritage in Turkiye, Yazilkaya and Hattusa archaeological sites and Bogazkoy Museum
This one day private tour departs and returns to Cappadocia and features both the ancient city of Hattusa and the prestigious archaeology museum.
Your English-speaking professionally-licensed guide and your driver will pick you up from your hotel and we will set off on our drive to the very heart of ancient Hittite civilization in Anatolia. We stop first at Yazilkaya to see this open air Hittite sanctuary as the morning sunlight illuminates the bas-reliefs. The beautiful images of the gods and goddesses cut into the rock walls and the freshwater springs show us that this was probably a place of worship.
We continue to the spectacular site of Hattusa. Formerly the capital of the Hittite Empire, it is notable for its urban organisation and the remarkable types of construction that have been preserved (temples, royal residences, fortifications). As we make our way around the grounds your guide will point out the carvings adorning the entrances - including the rich ornamentation of the Lion's Gate, Royal Gate and "Yer kapı" the postern gate complex.
Lunch will be at a local restaurant. In the afternoon we will visit the local archaeology museum of Bogazkoy. Named one of the best provincial museums in Türkiye and a must for anyone interested in the Hittites, it showcases many interesting artefacts from Hittite history and culture, all discovered in Hattusa. The pride of the collection are the two original sphinx statues that once stood guard at Hattusa's Sphinx gate.
After our museum visit we will then make our way back to Cappadocia where we will drop you off at your hotel.
